Traffic Calming Applications

One-Way Streets, Banned Turns and No-Entries

These facilities help control traffic movements, without fully restricting access. They can stop commuter "rat-runs" which happen in one peak only.
One-way working may be for the whole length of a street, or in a short length at one end.
A good alternative route must be found for traffic travelling in the opposite direction to the one-way street, or needing to turn in the direction of the ban. This alternative should not normally be via a residential road.

One-way streets often lead to an increase in traffic speed.
Short lengths are difficult to enforce if drivers are irresponsible enough to drive against the one-way. This is dangerous and illegal- penalties for which are mentioned in the Highway Code.
Some residents find one-way streets and banned movements inconvenient as they may result in lengthy detours and reduced access to their homes. In some cases they will travel along the street in the prohibited direction without regard for oncoming traffic or pedestrians.
It is very tempting for drivers to turn into a one way street when sat in heavy traffic on a main road if means that the driver think they can save a couple of minutes.

On site speed limits

Large Industrial sites or campuses often contain several miles of roads within their boundaries and are subject to the same problems experienced on public roads. Problems of speeding, parking and unauthorised vehicles are commonplace resulting in contraventions of site safety rules. A watchman system can be deployed throughout the site with the goal of educating drivers in the first instance but providing verifiable evidence to be used in instances of internal enforcement.

Schools & Playgrounds

It is vital that traffic travelling past schools and areas where children gather is controlled and drivers are not passing at excessive speeds. A Watchman system has the effect of slowing traffic on the route prior to reaching the main site therefore reducing speeds over greater distances and not just in the immediate vicinity of the protected area.

Alternative to other methods such as speed humps and chicanes

A Watchman Scheme has several benefits over other traffic calming systems such as speed humps, chicanes and road narrowing. A key benefit is access for the emergency services attending incidents where other methods have the effect of slowing all traffic irrespective of an emergency situation. Watchman also collects data for analysis allowing remedial action to be taken on routes with persistent offenders, something alternative schemes are not equipped to deal with. Chicanes and road narrowing schemes often involve substantial work and delays to traffic. The Watchman can normally be installed with the minimum disruption and more quickly than alternative methods.
